Dr. Leonard Cochrane

Education & Training

Dr. Leonard Cochrane graduated from Clemson University’s Honors College in 2015 with a degree in Bioengineering and departmental honors. During his time there, he served as a student senator and later as Student Body Vice President, while also contributing to published research in cardiovascular biomaterials and targeted cancer polymer therapeutics.

He earned his dental degree from The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), where his interest in periodontics took shape after shadowing various specialties. He went on to complete his residency in periodontics at MUSC, earning both a specialty certificate and a Master of Science in Dentistry. His research centered on a murine dental implant model to examine how antibiotics affect oral microbiota and alveolar wound healing.

Experience & Clinical Focus

Since graduating dental school in 2019 and completing his residency in 2022, Dr. Cochrane has been practicing as a periodontist for three years. He focuses on personalized treatment—understanding each patient’s goals and delivering exceptional care at every stage, from diagnosis to recovery.

Dr. Cochrane has a particular interest in LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure), a laser-based treatment for periodontal disease that offers less discomfort and excellent results. He also enjoys soft tissue grafting, both for treating gum recession and for enhancing restorative outcomes. His clinical work includes complex cases, such as full reconstruction for a patient who desire fixed implants to replace all their missing teeth as an alternative to removable dentures.

Commitment to Innovation

Continual learning is central to Dr. Cochrane’s approach. He is an active member of the American Academy of Periodontology and the Southern Academy of Periodontology and attends regular conferences for advanced education. He has trained with experts at Dr. Allen’s Center for Advanced Dental Education and the Pikos Institute, and he regularly reviews the latest clinical research in journals like the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry. His investment in LANAP has included extensive in-person training in Los Angeles.

Patient Philosophy & Community Impact

Dr. Cochrane emphasizes collaboration and transparency in care. At Coastal Periodontics, patients are educated using 3D imaging, digital scans, and photography to fully understand their treatment options. In his view, successful treatment is a two-way partnership built on trust and shared decision-making.

Outside the office, Dr. Cochrane remains involved in community care. He previously volunteered with the East Cooper Community Outreach Dental Clinic in Charleston, providing free extractions to underserved individuals. Through Coastal Periodontics, he supports local initiatives such as the Smith Medical Clinic, Brookgreen Gardens, and the Myrtle Beach Classic PGA event.

A Practice Built on Relationships

Dr. Cochrane believes what truly sets Coastal Periodontics apart is its dedication to the patient experience. He sees each new case not as a procedure, but as a long-term relationship—one where both the provider and patient are committed to the best possible outcomes through education, empathy, and expert care.
