The most predictable, esthetically capable gum graft, designed to cover exposed roots, reduce sensitivity, and thicken the tissue to help prevent future recession.
Connective tissue grafting is one of the most common gum grafts performed and is widely considered the gold standard for treating gingival recession. It is highly effective at covering exposed root surfaces, and often delivers the strongest aesthetic result.
Long-term studies show that connective tissue grafting does more than cover the site, it also thickens the surrounding gum tissue, which helps prevent recession from returning at the same tooth in the future.
Following a careful evaluation with our team, we build a treatment plan around the causes of your recession and the specific characteristics of the site. Connective tissue grafting may be the right option, and we walk through the details with you at your first visit.
When esthetics and long-term stability both matter, this is the graft that delivers.
Connective tissue grafts are highly effective at covering exposed root surfaces, which improves both appearance and sensitivity at the treated tooth.
Because the graft is placed beneath a covering flap of existing gum tissue, the result blends naturally with the surrounding gumline.
Long-term research shows that the procedure thickens the tissue around the treated tooth, which helps prevent recession from returning.
Connective tissue grafting is completed under local anesthesia in a single visit.
We assess every site of recession, review tissue thickness, and confirm that a connective tissue graft is the best fit for your case.
Both the recession site and the roof of the mouth are numbed so you do not experience discomfort during the procedure. IV sedation is available if preferred.
A small flap is made on the roof of the mouth, and a piece of connective tissue is carefully removed from beneath the surface layer. Dissolvable stitches are placed to close the donor site.
The recession site is prepared, and the connective tissue is positioned over the exposed root and stitched securely in place beneath a covering of your existing gum tissue.
Aftercare instructions, gentle hygiene, and follow-up visits confirm that both sites heal well and the coverage remains stable.

Follow the specific instructions we provide for diet, activity, and any medications. Do not brush or floss the repaired gumline until we confirm it is safe. A specialized rinse helps control plaque during healing, and an antibiotic may be prescribed to reduce infection risk.
For the first few days, stick with soft, cool foods, eggs, pasta, yogurt, cottage cheese, well-cooked vegetables, ice cream. Some initial swelling and minor bruising are normal.
Avoid touching or looking at the graft site. Discomfort and swelling generally resolve within a few days to a week; full graft healing takes several months.
