When a tooth has been missing for an extended period, the jawbone in that area is often too thin to support a dental implant. Ridge augmentation restores enough width and height for successful implant placement, and can improve the aesthetic contour of the gums as well.
Ridge augmentation involves placing bone grafting material directly onto the jaw at the site of a missing tooth. That graft helps reestablish the natural shape of the bone and the overlying gum tissue.
Once ridge integrity is restored in both width and height, the site has the stability a new implant needs for long-term success, and the final restoration can be designed with better aesthetics.

The site is numbed with local anesthetic for a comfortable experience. IV sedation is available if you prefer, following a thorough medical review.
A small incision exposes the ridge, and a bone graft is placed to rebuild the deficient area. We commonly combine the graft with biologic materials that encourage healing.
When possible, we use safe, effective donor bone from a tissue bank so there is no need to create a second surgical site in the mouth. Material selection is tailored to your case.
The site is closed with sutures to begin the healing process. The graft matures over months as your body integrates it into the surrounding bone.
Initial recovery includes mild discomfort for about a week, along with some swelling and possible bruising that ease as healing progresses. Following our diet and activity guidance is key.
Avoid hard foods, sipping through a straw, and smoking during the healing window. The graft itself can take up to six months or more to mature enough for implant placement.
Once you have fully recovered, the best thing you can do is maintain good daily oral hygiene and stay current with cleanings, that is what protects the investment long term.
